Last and First

Last flower of 2007 and first one of 2008...

Flowers are enjoyable all year long...but when the weather is cold, dreary, icy, snowy, foggy or what ever looking at a bright colored flower can just add a spark to my day.

Leon went to Lowe's on the Friday after Thanksgiving and saw some poinsettas. He had not bought me flowers in quite some time - so this was a good opportunity - plus the price was certainly right. $1.25. In fact he bought two of them. One I placed here in the computer room and the other one in the kitchen. The one in here lasted until the end of December. This one - in the kitchen- is still looking just pretty good to be in bloom as long as it has been. This picture was taken a couple of days ago. Two months of bloom makes me really think we are getting our money's worth and then some. I planted this amaryllis the last part of December...did not know if it would bloom or not as the leaves were white and had already grown about two inches. I followed the directions anyway. Now look what I have. I could not get all four blooms to show in the camera lens unless I put it in front of the mirrow.
I will plant it in one of the flower beds in late spring and let it grow until fall. Dig it up in late fall...winterize it and replant in late spring ...it will bloom again. This is what I have done for the last 4 years with other ones I have.

Last year at Christmas our boss bought three of us a pointsetta. Our flowers lasted for ever and finally about in June they fell off. Once a week we watered the plants and just a month ago they were so big that one of the ladies transplanted them all three into a huge pot for the floor. It's beginning to look like a bush. No more flowers but the greenery is just beautiful.

I am with Kristie, this makes me want to get out there and dig in the dirt. Not that I could grow these if I dug in it all day but still............

You really seem to have the touch with flowers! Want to come play with my dirt?

They're lovely, Amelia. I've never had any luck getting any of those types of flowers to bloom again. My friend's family had a 50-year-old Christmas Cactus, and it was like a bush after all that time. What wonderful blooms it had. I almost stole it :)

How do you winterize your amaryllis? I need to do something with mine as it has already bloomed.
