Beauty on the Beast

A prickly pear plant is not pretty - at least most of the months of the year. It has thorns that can cause you much misery if you come into contact with them. God in all His glory gave this cactus something to be proud of during a period in the spring. The flowers that appear are absolutely beautiful. The cactus we have has yellow flowers - but some have reddish orange I understand.

Leon dug this plant up out of the pasture and put it in a planter he had built. We figured the best home would be by the wagon...some how some fancy schmancy flower/plant would be out of place by the old worn out wagon.

Here are some pictures - hope you enjoy them.100_3786100_3791100_3792100_3793100_3794

Some people make prickly pear jelly - not me. I will stick with my orange marmalade.

Wow, that is an amazing flower. I remember us having a cactus plant as a child. I also remember getting a few prickles in my hand.

My hubby has actually cooked with cactus before. I'm more of a reg. food kind of girl myself. : )

Well, those flowers are well worth waiting for, though I wouldn't fancy having to avoid the thorns all year long.
