Something New

For the past three years or more I have kicked around the idea of getting an embroidery machine. I have probably mentioned here on my blog - don't know for sure. During this period of time I was never able to justify the expense. Now, I am referring to one of those units that sell for around $400.00 - certainly not one of the thousands of dollars model. Of course, I had spoken to Leon about it and as usual did not get any negative responses from him.

Yesterday, when in Wal-Mart, Leon asked me which one of those machines did I have in mind. So I showed him the one....he immediately hoisted the big box into the cart.

Of course, I knew absolutely nothing about the machine...only what I have seen on tv. I had been talking a bit to Kristi about some of the in's and out's she had experienced with her unit.
One small problen with getting help from her is she is in Kentucky and I am in Oklahoma. Oh yes, we have a phone line or e-mail as a means of communication. Just not quite the same as being in the same room though.

So called Melba (dear friend of many years and a very close neighbor) and told her about the new machine....then I asked her to come up. She has an embroidery machine so I knew she could help me. Now her machine is one of those champagne models where mine is the beer style.

Did we ever have fun trying to figure out these buttons (on the screen). Yes, we had the manual - all nearly 200 pages of it). Like most people I don't want to read real close - just sort of hit the high points - or check out just a certain area to get a required result.

Anyway, we got it worked out last night after a two to three hour period. Actually embroidered the letter "W". I realize that does not sound like much of an accomplishment to those of you who know about such things.. but to me it was a very big step.

This morning I piddled with it awhile longer..need to get real comfortable with it. Have not decided for sure - but I think I will do my quilting sewing on my Singer and leave the embroidery work on the Brother. Perhaps, I will change my mind as I grow in my confidence in the use of it.

The first thing Holly said, "Now Mother you can embroider on the back of the quilt all the info you want." I will do that on a small piece of fabric and then hand stitch it down - at least until I get used to all the bells and whistles. This is a copy of the one I did this morning. I will put this on the quilt I am currently hand quilting. The quilt is for me - to be used when I nap on the sofa in the afternoon.

I still can not justify the expense of this new "play toy". I guess all I can say I am helping stimulate the economy in spending money.

That Leon is a great guy!!!

I think you will use this machine a lot with the two grand babies to make things for. Just think of the cute things you can make for LA!

I am so happy for you and your new toy!! (and when you get our age, you do not have to justify anything to anybody!!!)

Congratulations on your new machine! I had a sewing machine sales rep tell me recently (and he carries ALL the big brands) that for embroidery, you couldn't do any better than the Brother. The other machines have lots of bells and whistles but for the money, the Brother is the way he would go. I can't wait to see what you create!!

I have the small Brother Embroidery Machine. I use it for monograms but seldom do embroidery as I enjoy and like hand embroidery. I don't want my "hand made" stuff to look commercially made. Guess that's just one of my quirks! Just use a good stabilizer under your fabric and you'll have no problems. Keep lots of embroidery machine needles on hand. I also like the look of cotton thread just as well as the rayon or other shiny threads. Have fun! I do the same thing on the back of my quilts!

You will love your machine. Take your time and work through the designs and the book. I don't have your machine, but if you need help, give a shout.

What a great guy you have there! Hope you aren't having too much fun with that new machine and ignoring DH.

That is going to make such nice labels for your quilts.

Oh Amelia, I bet you got the same machine that I have. I love it. I am just learning too. I love what you did. You have already done more than me. Maybe we can help each other. I love the button instead of the foot pedal. Is it a Brother SE 350? I love it. The CD helps a lot. How exciting! I love mine. I also have a singer model too. Hey and thank you for your sweet comment.

Congratulations on your new machine. That was so sweet of your husband.

I would have been very happy to get a "w" done also. It is always fun to learn new things.

Love what you have done with the name/date. That will be fabulous to personalize quilts.

Congrats on the new machine Amelia, How sweet is that husband of your to treat you to a nice surprise like that. I'd cook him a good supper for that one, but I bet you do that each night anyway. Sounds like you read the directions sorta like I do. I like to hit the high notes and I usually figure it out as I go. Fun times are in store for you with this thig thats for sure. It will be exciting to see what all you make in the next year.
Good luck with it and have fun.

What a wonderful new toy - will you have time for anything else now that you've started playing with it? It's something I've fancied too, but don't really need - but if I mentioned it to Christopher I'd probably get a similar response to Leon's. I'm looking forward to seeing what you get up to.
